Praxis – The Art of Collaboration is a three-minute short film collaboration by women in the Work of Art cohort. It was created for and will be screened at the Work of Art Showcase and Forum in Orange NSW in November 2024.

The video is a manifestation of the core purpose of the Work of Art program, which is to bring together otherwise isolated regional creatives. The collaborators are Suzanne Whiteman from Meerschaum Vale (dance and voice over), Susan Fell from Mullumbimby (textiles and voice over), Jane Richens from Dungog (soundscape) and Keva Abotomey from Wingello (music and piano) along with film producer Andy Bambach.

The idea for the film was born at a face to face Work of Art workshop in Coffs Harbour in April of 2024. It was filmed at Suzie’s place Meerschaum Vale, Northern Rivers NSW – off the grid in nature on 330 acres sharing space with 38 endangered species and Ballina’s Koalas: a 100 acre koala management zone on the property in partnership with the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust, with lots of eucalyptus and native flora.

The multi-disciplinary nature of the project has been such a wonderful way to learn about the creative work and processes of Northern Rivers creatives – Suzie Whiteman and Susan Fell. Along with film producer Andy Bambach, their support and encouragement on this project has been so affirming while I tried something new. I loved the opportunity to create for a purpose (a film that needed music), and to create from home in between and around the sleep and feeding cycles of my daughter.

As I enter a new phase of life – motherhood – this collaboration has opened up new possibilities for me as a creative business owner, particularly through the exploration of a new revenue stream and working in digital spaces with like-minded creatives many kilometres away. Thank you to Regional Arts NSW and the Work of Art program for making this collaboration, and its subsequent creative and business growth, possible.
