Write Around the Murray (WAM) is a five day festival of reading, writing and storytelling. Held in the vibrant regional city of Albury on the Murray River, it attracts world-class authors and presents eclectic and high-calibre events.

Stories are the springboard to engage readers, writers, artists and storytellers in spirited conversation and community celebration. Activities include a festival dinner, literary lunch, poetry slam, workshops, author talks, performances, panel discussions, writing competitions, children’s events and a wood-fired oven event by the river.

What began as a community initiative to celebrate the opening of the Albury Library Museum in 2007 has grown to become the annual must-attend event for story lovers everywhere. The vibe is festive, friendly, stimulating and frequently surprising, with a great mix of free and ticketed events catering to all ages and interests.

Events take place in and around the architecturally stunning Library Museum, with the adjoining Retro Lane Café and sunny QEII square providing the perfect place to lunch, reflect and continue festival conversations.

WAM 2022 is about Playing with Story. Through poetry, performance, memoir, fiction, visual art, song and more, this year’s passionate gathering of storytellers will shed light on creativity and the art of storytelling, in a festival designed to inspire and surprise.

Whether reading them or writing them, stories usher us into the realm of creativity and imagination. A mysterious place of curiosity, fascination, obscurity and invention. A place of depth, discovery and transformation. The best stories teem with existential truths, where we might encounter disruption and devastation alongside exaltation and awe.

In Playing with Story, WAM 2022 takes a tour through truth, imagination, creativity and reinvention. We bring you stories that erupt in a riotous celebration of life, and stories that simmer with quiet determination; stories that stretch out before us, leading the way into new territory, and stories that circle around behind us, drawing us closer in, to connection and solidarity.

This year’s gathering of authors, illustrators, poets and artists are playing with form, pushing boundaries, experimenting and exploring. They reveal the play of creativity as they take us behind the scenes to share insights and ideas gleaned from a dedication to working and playing with stories.

Join with us in September to read, write, listen and play in the creative realm of stories.
