Delivered each year by the Australia Council for the Arts, the First Nations Arts Awards are held on May 27 to mark the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum. The Awards recognise and celebrate the work and achievements of First Nations artists.


Nominations are now open for the 2022 First Nations Arts Awards. The categories are:


  • The Red Ochre Award – A lifetime achievement award which includes recognition for both outstanding senior male artist and an outstanding senior female artist.
  • The Dreaming Award – Established in 2012 to support an inspirational young First Nations artist aged 18-30 years to create a major body of work through mentoring and partnerships.
  • First Nations Emerging Career Development Award – Open to Australian First Nations artists between 18-30 years old, living in Australia or overseas to pursue their professional development.

Applications close October 12.
