Fun Theatre for the Very Young

Location: Bathurst, Central West (Arts OutWest)
Contribution: $3,000 – Country Arts Support Program (CASP)
A weekly 30-minute theatre show for 2-6 year olds in Bathurst was supported in 2017 by the Country Arts Support Program.
Fun Theatre for the Very Young was weekly half hour theatre show presented during school terms by professional local theatre makers Kathy Cameron and Nel Kentish. Each week kids watched, cheered and even participated on stage.
“I believe this introduction to live theatre performances to very young children played an important role in developing future theatre audiences as well as providing entertainment and helping develop children’s creativity,” Kathy Cameron said.
Bathurst Theatre Company received $3,000 from the 2017 round of the Country Arts Support Program (CASP) to support this project, which had begun in 2016. The CASP funding enabled Fun Theatre for the Very Young to employ a local professional theatre worker to partner with Kathy Cameron to tour the show to local preschools and to maintain the weekly performances.
The weekly Wednesday show included short plays and stories and a ‘fun band’ made up of children in the audience. The show drew a regular, intimate audience with some families attending each week and a group from one of the early learning centres making the show a regular community outing as they had children with a keen interest in live performance.
“Preschool educators have expressed great appreciation for the way we introduce such young children to theatre through our half-hour interactive shows specifically designed for that particular age group,” creator and performer Kathy Cameron said.
