Local Government Cultural Awards announced

The Local Government Shires Association (LGSA) announced the winners of the 2008 Local Government Cultural Awards on Friday 2 May at NSW Parliament House. The Awards celebrate and showcase an extraordinary range of arts and cultural activity across a full spectrum of council operations.

This year there were 116 submissions from 71 councils across the state. The award categories were: Aboriginal Cultural Development; Cultural Industries; Cultural Infrastructure; Integrated Cultural Policy Implementation; Library and Information Services; and Programs, Projects and Partnerships. There were also two inaugural special awards for Accessible Arts and the Peoples Choice Award.

There were several winners from regional NSW councils:

Griffith City Council - Are We There Yet? Griffith’s Cultural Plan (Integrated Cultural Policy Implementation)
Griffith City Council – WYK on Tour (Aboriginal Cultural Development)
Byron Shire Council – Developing Regional Cultural and Screen Industries (Cultural Industries)
Albury City Council – Library Museum (Cultural Infrastructure)
Inverell Shire Council – Inverell Shire Public Library Redevelopment (Cultural Infrastructure)
Bland Shire Council – Bland But Not Boring (Integrated Cultural Policy Implementation)
Tenterfield Shire Council – Digitisation of Tenterfield, Newspapers Provide Keyword (Library and Information Services)
Upper Hunter Shire Council – Turning the Pages (Programs, Projects and Partnerships)
Wagga Wagga City Council – From All Four Corners, Celebrating Diversity (Programs, Projects and Partnerships)
Camden Shire Council – Camden Creative Studios (Accessible Arts Award Winner)

The following projects were highly commended:

Broken Hill City Council – A Weekend of Crime (Library and Information Services)
Wagga Wagga City Council – A Haven Now and Then (Library and Information Services)
