“The festival celebrates the unique model of education Nambucca Heads High School has developed with youth in engineering, the arts and community development,” said Simon McKinney, Principal of NHHS, “This project is a community based education model. It incorporates existing businesses and community organisations in developing our local youth.”
Another unique aspect of the project has been to engage volunteer and community organisations, from a range of focus groups, including Muurrbay Language Centre to support the concept of community collaboration.
The model has been developed by Gary Cattanach, an Aboriginal teacher at Nambucca Heads High School, and artist. The project has increased business development opportunities and extensions to services in the community.
The whole community will be able to view the construction of the projects through a short film to be shown at Nambucca Heads Surf Lifesaving Club on the day of the festival which the students have helped to produce. It documents the ongoing development of the sculptures through a number of school years.
