Wayzgoose Weekend to Celebrate Printing and Printmaking at NERAM
The New England Regional Art Museum is holding the 2018 Wimble’s Wayzgoose event at the Museum of Printing and across the New England Regional Art Museum site from Friday 6 until Sunday 8 April 2018.
The Wimble’s Wayzgoose event is a celebration of printing and printmaking that this year will include the launch of the inaugural F.T. Wimble Lecture as well as a free half-day seminar, four practical printing and printmaking workshops and the return of the popular Printer’s Picnic day which will include talks, demonstrations, music and food.
“The Wimble’s Wayzgoose event was developed to create community interest in the Museum of Printing and its unique collection of printing equipment, wood and metal type as well as unique graphic material,” said Robert Heather, Art Museum Director. “It brings to Armidale print enthusiasts, artists, designers, collectors, researchers and makers from around Australia for a weekend of activities, talks, workshops and events.”
“This year we are launching the inaugural F.T. Wimble Lecture with a presentation by historian Shane Carmody on the great print collections and libraries of Britain in partnership with ADFAS Armidale.”
“We are also fortunate to have American letterpress artist Cynthia Marsh from Austin Peay University in Clarkesville Tennessee as our visiting artist who will present a workshop on using letterpress and wood type to make bold statements in posters and graphics.”
“We have a range of practical printing and printmaking workshops on offer as well as a half day seminar on various aspects of the artform and its history,” he said. “This year we will be hosting practical printmaking and book arts workshops by leading artists such as Glen Skien, Tim Mosely, Dianne Longley, Clint Harvey and Cynthia Marsh as well as presentations and talks by local artists including the Black Gully Printmakers.”
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the Wayzgoose was originally an entertainment given by a master-printer to his workmen to mark the beginning of the season of working by candlelight. In later use, it meant an annual festivity held in summer by the employees of a printing establishment, consisting of a dinner and (usually) an excursion into the country. In more recent times it has become a celebration held by printing and printmaking studios and communities where artists, craftspeople, technicians and printers get together to celebrate their work with their friends and families.
