Threads of Our Communities Launch in Hay
Over the next few months, South West Arts will be celebrating fibre art of the local area.
The celebration, titled Threads of our Communities, encompasses a range of activities including fibre art exhibitions, knitting kits for schools and a travelling public artwork. Threads of our Communities will be officially launched in Hay on Tuesday 28 June.
The local community is invited to attend the launch, which will be held at the Hay War Memorial Hall from 11am on Tuesday 28 June. The launch will include morning tea, fibre art and craft activities for kids as well as a giant knitting spool. Threads of our Communities will be officially launched on behalf of the South West region by the Mayor of Hay Shire Council, Cr Bill Sheaffe.
Following the launch, South West Arts will be taking the giant knitting spool on a tour through towns in the region to encourage the community to celebrate and create fibre art.
Fibre art is art that is created using natural or synthetic fibres or techniques that are traditionally thought of as relating to fibre, such as sewing, knitting or weaving. South West Arts is encouraging artists and crafters in the community to create fibre artworks inspired by the communities, people, land and cultures in which we live. These can then be entered into the Threads of our Communities fibre art prize and exhibition, which will be displayed in galleries throughout the region toward the end of this year.
