In the dark days of World War II, Coffs Harbour was selected as the best town on the east coast of Australia to construct a military operations base, and so a bunker was built. Fast-forward 4 decades and the building that had fallen into disrepair and was dangerously being used as a shelter by the area’s homeless people.

This was when the Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour City proposed it be converted into a gallery to house the Coffs Cartoon Collection which recognised the heritage value of the space. Due to their contribution and the council’s,  The Bunker Cartoon Gallery has been open to the public since 1996 and houses the largest contemporary collection of original cartoons in Australia.

Throughout June and July, the gallery is running a food theme curated by Lisa Magri and  Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery director, Dr Leigh Summers. The Dinner Party exhibition is the key attraction for this unique event.

“Gastronomes and art lovers alike will enjoy a menu of the freshest of humour, marinaded in satire and served up with great dollops of laughter,” says Dr Summers.

“Plus we’re joining forces with our local food heroes – the ‘Meals on Wheels’ volunteers – to provide home-delivered humour by giving them copies of cartoons from our collection to give to each of their clients the next time they deliver a meal.”

The Bunker is also running a special school holiday Bunker’s-No-Bake-Off.  The gallery invited mini-masterchefs to send in their best recipe to the gallery for the chance to win mystery prizes and be selected for the final round.  Chosen finalists will present their dishes to judges on Wednesday July 3 at 10.30 am.

“We’ll provide all the ingredients and a morning tea,” says Dr Summers “and everyone is welcome to come along.”

On Thursday, July 11, from 11am-1pm, the Gallery will also be hosting Show Us Your Wheels for kids to try out their skills on wheels in the Bunker Gallery car park. (Participants must bring their own safety gear).

Coffs Harbour City Council’s exciting new Skate Park development plan will be on display.
