Regional Designers Feature at Indigenous Fashion Week 2014

Australia's First Indigenous Fashion Week

Tickets are now on sale for Australia’s first Indigenous Fashion Week, showcasing the very best of Indigenous design in spectacular runway style.

AIFW will also be hosting a Trade Fair during the runway shows. This is the public’s opportunity to meet and purchase from over 40 exhibitors gathered from across Australia showcasing their art, fashion, homewares, furniture and accessories.

The program, which runs at the same time as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, has been in part designed as a platform for Aboriginal Australian models. The AIFW has run a nationwide search for Aboriginal and Torres Strait models, judged by Vogue Australia cover girl and David Jones ambassador Samantha Harris. The winners will be walking the runway on the day.

Designers from regional NSW will be participating, including Mia Brennan and the Wake-Up Time Women, both from Arts Northern Rivers.

MIA BRENNAN

Mia Brennan is an emerging designer known for producing striking and unique pieces. She is the creator of fashion label, Mimi Designs. Mia’s roots are firmly set in her Aboriginal ancestry and she draws from concepts of adaption, connection and growth within our environment. Based in the hinterlands of Byron Bay, her surroundings are reflected in all elements of her work. Earthy fibres and textiles are blended with a sophisticated and contemporary edge. Behind the simplicity of each beautiful garment lies a belief in culture, independence, and ethical manufacturing.

WAKE-UP TIME WOMEN

The Wake Up Time Women, from Casino NSW, are a fair trade weaving group who create beautiful textiles, interwoven with their stories and tradition. Wake Up Time group started as a collaboration between the local Indigenous women of Casino and The Buttery at Bangalow as part of its outreach INTRA program. The aim is to assist “people to find their way out of active addiction by discovering their own self worth, strengths and place in society”. They have since exhibited and sold works across the state.
