RAF Project | Orange Regional Gallery, StarPicket
Image: Richard Swansborough at Lake Mungo National Park.
Opening on Friday 9th of February at Orange Regional Gallery is StarPicket, an exhibition and project by the CORRIDOR Project supported by the Regional Arts Fund.
StarPicket is inspired by the astronomical translations of the night sky in relation to seasonal land management activity and physical pathways, through oral histories by Indigenous traditional owners and Elders in both the Central West NSW, and Lake Mungo NSW. Artists explored interpretations of star navigation with relativity to cross culture, geomorphology, wayfaring and storytelling.
RAF (Regional Arts Fund – NSW) supported the artists on a field trip to Lake Mungo between June- 1st-6th 2017, the five days were spent processing work based on star culture, palaeontology, geography, flora and fauna, land pathways, agricultural systems and traditional knowledge. Star Picket, will culminate in an exhibition held at Orange Regional Gallery opening on February 9th – April 1st 2018.
The CORRIDOR project would like to acknowledge the Paakantji (Barkinji), Ngyiampaa, and Mutthi Mutthi Nations who are the Traditional Custodians of the Land at Mungo. We would also like to pay respect to their people both past and present and extend that respect to other Aboriginal Australians who collaborate on projects with us through our Cultural Connections program.
Artists include Genevieve Carroll, Phoebe Cowdery, John Daly, Jaq Davies, Rebecca Dowling, Virginia Hilyard, Ken Hutchinson, Aleshia Lonsdale, Bill Moseley, Nyree Reynolds, Irene Ridgeway, Vicki Skarratt, Heather Vallance and Lee Wynyard.
Curated by Phoebe Cowdery and Aleshia Lonsdale.
