Maitland Regional Art Gallery | Wendy Stokes: Walking through the space of landscape
Image: Wendy Stokes , Notation 4” (detail), 2016, acrylic and oilstick on canvas , 204 × 650cm.
These expanded painterly drawings reflect acts of process and plein air engagement synthesising a spatial experience of landscape. They become residues of lived encounter; where the body has become a vessel collecting sensory experiences as one moves the space of landscape, primarily Stokes coastal territory. They become notations, recordings of fleeting moments. They act as a filter, through which air, light, space and mark hover and suspend; allowing the mark to oscillate in hybrid territory between abstraction, landscape and fluid geographies. Landscape is no longer interpreted as static and is transformed through shifting experiences.
