This introductory workshop will help you learn how to investigate, define and communicate the meaning and importance of precious objects and collections. Debbie Sommers trains and mentors many museum workers and she will cover what is a Statement of Significance, how to assess and research an object and writing about the why and how around the importance of objects and collections. The workshop includes practical examples and workshop notes.
About Debbie Sommers
Debbie Sommers is Vice -President of the Port Macquarie Historical Society, President of Museums Australia – Mid North Coast Chapter, an elected member of Museums Australia National Council, Convenor of the Hastings Museums and Heritage Group, and a member of Museums and Galleries NSW Peer Panel. Debbie also contributes a weekly Historical Matters page in Monday’s Port Macquarie News and writes a bi-monthly article for Greater Port Macquarie Focus Magazine.
Debbie is currently the Volunteer Curator at the Port Macquarie Museum. Her passion is researching and documenting the Port Macquarie Historical Society’s vast collection and developing new exhibitions to tell Port Macquarie’s rich and unique history. She has written hundreds of Statements of Significance and has trained and mentored many museum workers across the Mid North Coast and beyond in Significance assessment.
