Collection: Portraits
explores and showcases the diverse artistic styles and techniques of portraiture through presenting portraits held in the Grafton Regional Gallery’s collection.

Portraits by local and national artists are included as part of the exhibition. Clarence Valley photographer Deborah Novak’s portrait titled Portrait of a Lady will be on show, as well as John Witzig’s Clarence Couple from 1974. Works such as these sit alongside prints of paintings by national artists such as Charles Blackman and Judy Cassab.

The diversity of portraiture has been exemplified through paintings such as Frederic Bates Portrait of a Young Man representing a traditional style of portraiture while James Whitington’s Self Portrait representing an abstract and contemporary look at the tradition of portraiture.

The success of portraiture prizes and exhibitions like the Archibald really demonstrate how portraiture holds a special place in the heart of art lovers. Ultimately being about people and the human condition, portraiture is a genre that continues to inspire.
