In an effort to address the region’s arts and disability needs, Arts North West hosted the New England North West Regional (En)Able Arts Forum in Armidale in July. The Forum was the first step in a project which will develop a dedicated arts and disabilities network that can be managed through a regional hub, creating a sustainable and supportive platform for arts and disability in the New England North West. The Forum identified the need for a dedicated art centre that is accessible for artists with disabilities and coordinated by dedicated project workers. It discussed the need for training programs and professional development opportunities for artists with disabilities and the possibility of establishing a central hub that could take outreach programs to the rest of the region. Arts North West will establish an email network on the website www.artsnw.com.au to facilitate the communication of ideas, issues, contacts, opportunities and workshops as the project progresses. Popular concurrent sessions included ‘Dance Like A Man’, ‘Yarn On – Hands-on session with the Knitting Room’ and the presentation of the ‘Drive’ project by bigHart, which used film to explore the risks young men take when they first reach driving age. Enveloping and intersecting the conference was the Junction Arts Festival, offering a brim-full program of performances, installations, exhibitions and creative exchanges throughout Launceston, in the streets, up trees and just about anywhere you looked. In the wash-up to the federal election and the uncertainty around the future of the National Broadband Network, Australia's RADO (Regional Arts Development Officer) Network is teaming up with Feral Arts on a Rural Broadband Campaign. RADOs are calling on rural and regional Australians to add their voices to an online campaign about access to high speed broadband by creating a digital postcard which carries the message. Far South Coast Living Artist Scholarship announced
The 2011 Far South Coast Living Artist Scholarship has been awarded to Matthew Jones for an ambitious proposed three-part project comprising site-specific sculpture, a gallery exhibition of watercolour portraits and a still life installation. Matthew accepted his Scholarship at Bega Regional Art Gallery during an event attended by local artists, sponsors, art lovers, the Deputy Mayor, the General Manager and Group Managers, and previous recipients of the Scholarship. NSW artists Stephen King and Julia Griffin – who live and work in Walcha where they run a sheep farm – have been honoured with an exhibition of their works at the Galerie am Park in Vienna. Griffin has 17 oil paintings in the show depicting Australian roadscapes from the tablelands to the outback, while King is exhibiting 13 carved 'bushmen' created from Australian timbers, as well as larger sculptures developed on site in Austria. The exhibition will opened on 9 September by Australian Ambassador Michael Potts. Regional Arts NSW congratulates Stephen and Julia on this very exciting achievement. For further information visit the artists' website at www.blackfellowsgully.com.au Project ReportsWeaving Wellbeing project links health communities
As the new Orange Health Service takes shape on the Bloomfield Hospital site, art is playing a key role in linking residents in outlining towns with the service. “There are going to be big changes at Bloomfield very quickly. The site needs to stay family friendly and respect the dignity of people who have lived at Bloomfield for a long time. There are also increased traffic and safety issues to deal with,” says Meg Simpson, from GWAHS Mental Health Promotion and Prevention Unit. The Weaving Wellbeing project has been an artistic and creative response to the practical and social needs created by these changes. Since March, artist Gabriella Hegyes has been working with people in Condobolin and with mental health staff and consumers at the Bloomfield campus to design and create terrazzo tiles that will form walkways leading through the new hospital. Other tiles will give directional signage and help with pedestrian safety around the existing facilities at Bloomfield. The project will also involve large installation pieces based on traditional Wiradjuri weaving techniques made by art workshop participants. For further information please contact Arts OutWest on 02 6338 4657 or visit the website www.artsoutwest.org.au. The Weaving Wellbeing project is supported by the Australian Government through the Regional Arts Fund. Engaging Visions for a sustainable future
The results of a three-year collaborative art project exploring environmental issues across the Murray-Darling basin have been revealed in a book and exhibition launched in August at ANU. The Engaging Visions project was an initiative between ANU and the Murray Darling which brought local communities and artists together to share ideas on environmental management and sustainability. These ideas and values were later translated into a range of different media – including photography, painting and sculpture. Dr Rod Lamberts, a Chief Investigator in the project, said that Engaging Visions provided an example of community engagement with artists that could be rolled out across Australia. “The project provides a clear message to art schools and other institutions that they can broaden their interaction and have a significant impact on catchment management,” said Dr Lamberts. The Engaging Visions book is available for free download from the project’s website at http://engagingvisions.com.au New ResourcesArtist careers research
The Australia Council for the Arts has released two new pieces of research which together paint a comprehensive picture of the working lives of Australia’s 44,000 professional artists. The two projects – Do you really expect to get paid? by Professor David Throsby from Macquarie University and What’s your other job? by Professor Stuart Cunningham from the Queensland University of Technology – both show that artists continue to struggle financially, earning a median income of just $35,900 a year, including arts and non-arts related income. Both reports and the research project summary are available for download from the Australia Council website at http://www.australiacouncil.gov.au/research/artists Art_a_base winter/spring 2010
