Indigenous Arts Research Project
Research Officer Ruben Allas has completed a four month contract at Regional Arts NSW and we are pleased to present his final report entitled Identification of Engagement Opportunities in the Indigenous Arts Industry in NSW. With the assistance of funding from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) through the Emerging Indigenous Entrepreneur Initiative program, Ruben mapped existing Indigenous arts centres, art businesses and artists in NSW, explored key market areas, conducted a survey with Regional Arts Development Officers and researched relevant funding programs and services. Ruben also visited Armidale, Tamworth, Kempsey, Coffs Harbour, Broken Hill, Wilcannia and the Northern Rivers region – a trip which highlighted the limitations of information in the public domain through desktop research and the realisation that, although this research sets a solid foundation, there is still much work to be done. With the assistance of funding from Arts NSW Ruben will further develop this research over the next 6 months through a training needs analysis and skills audit of the Indigenous creative arts sector in NSW. The final report is now available on the Regional Arts NSW website: www.regionalartsnsw.com.au.

Full steam ahead for NERAM with legal action over
After months of uncertainty the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) is finally on a firm footing following a Supreme Court decision to allow NERAM Limited to become Trustee of the Hinton Trust. It means an end to Supreme Court actions which have dogged the gallery since the proposal to sell a half share in its Tom Roberts masterpiece Mossman’s Bay to the Art Gallery of NSW began a contentious legal trail. Under the new arrangement NERAM Ltd will replace Armidale Dumaresq Council (ADC) as Trustee of the iconic collection valued at more than $36 million. The transfer of Trusteeship of the Hinton Trust to NERAM Ltd comes with a trust fund of $500,000 from ADC to be invested for the future care and conservation of the collection.

Bold Beads, Delicate Work
What a contradiction that delicate, small glass beads can also be bold, aggresive pieces of art. The Bathurst Bead and Wirecraft Guild had access to well known Australian artist Pauline Delaney for a June long weekend Lampwork Workshop in Bathurst. Highlights of the course were learning how to create lamp work, glass beads and many other bead pieces creatively. Delany’s work is on show in many exhibitions across Australia, Japan and New York. “For two days you could almost hear a pin drop as all students revelled in the opportunity to delve into these new skills” said Bead and Wirecraft Guild workshop coordinator Judy Attard. Anyone interested in bead and wirecraft can contact Judy Attard: Tel 02 6337 1705
This workshop was supported by a grant from the Country Arts Support Program (CASP).

New Resources
Making Meaning, Making Money
Making Meaning, Making Money: Directions for the arts and cultural industries in The Creative Age is a new book edited by Lisa Andersen and Kate Oakley which offers a timely exploration of arts and cultural policy in Australia. In the wake of the current economic crisis, cultural advocates, policy makers and critics are jostling to assert or assess the continuing importance of the 'creative industries' model developed over the last decade. Some of the most enthusiastic advocates for the creative industries have been in Australia, including within the Rudd government. Yet the mainstream political debate in Australia remains locked on primary and manufacturing industries, with the arts sidelined as a cost rather than promoted as an engine or growth.
