Filmmakers from Australia and around the world are invited to submit films of all lengths and genres, completed after 1 January 2019, to be considered for competition in the ten day Festival.

All films selected to compete will also be automatically considered for nomination in any of the BBFF Awards they may qualify for. Categories include: Best Film, Best Documentary, Best Short Film, Best Music Video (previous entrants include Deadmau5, Massive Attack, Gotye and Goldfrappe), Best Young Australian Filmmaker, Best Screenplay, and many more.

In particular, the BBFF Best Screenplay award is one of the only screenplay contests in Australia run in conjunction with a major film festival, with a $1,500 first prize.

The Young Australian Filmmaker of the Year prize is also an excellent opportunity for young and emerging Australian directors aged under 25 to have their work featured alongside established international names.

Held in and around the spectacular surrounds of Byron Bay, BBFF is a highlight for local and international filmmakers and film-lovers alike. With previous years drawing entries from up to 50 countries from across the globe, the Festival showcases inspiring, thought-provoking and engaging entertainment generated by filmmakers and VR creators at all career stages and across all genres.
