2018 Sees Launch of New ORO Mosaic Award – Applications Now Open

2018 sees the launch of an exciting new award for mosaics in Australia. The ORO Mosaic Award has been created to support emerging and mid-career artists and one scholarship will be awarded annually for the next 10 years.

The award offers grants of up to $2,000 to assist emerging and mid-career artists to take up professional development opportunities.

Kate Butler, a NSW mosaic artist who has established the award said today “The aim of the award is to support artists who show great promise and commitment to contemporary mosaic art but are unable to take the next step due to financial constraints and limited grant opportunities. I am really excited to launch the Oro Mosaic Award this year.”

Kate Nixon from Ausglass said “It’s exciting that in the last decade we have seen a global resurgence in the popularity of mosaic art. The recent highly publicised completion of New York’s Second Avenue Subway featured mosaic work by artists including Chuck Close and Vik Muniz, and even street artists such as Invader’s video-game inspired mosaic graffiti and Jim Bachor’s pothole mosaics have embraced its processes. The Oro Mosaic Award will provide exciting opportunities for Australia artists to expand their mosaic practice.”

Pamela Irving, an internationally acclaimed mosaic artist and past Vice President of Mosaic Association of Australia and New Zealand said “This award will enable Australian mosaic artists to further showcase their talents on the world stage. It will do much to foster professional development. The Award is a significant step in the advancement of contemporary Australian mosaic practice.”

Applications for the inaugural 2018 Oro Mosaic Award will open on Monday 27 August 2018 and can be found at www.windmilltrust.org.au/oro-mosaic. The closing date for applications is 31 October 2018.
