Final Days Before Whiteley Heads Somewhere Else27.11.2017
Just a few days remain to see the extraordinarily popular Brett Whiteley: other places (somewhere else) exhibition at Tweed Regional Gallery, before the collection heads off to Gosford Regional Gallery and Arts Centre.
More than 400 people have streamed through the exhibition each day since it opened in September, inspiring comments in the Visitors’ Book such as: “Brett Whiteley WOW!”; “You just have to go, it’s amazing!”; “Brett Whiteley – what can I say? Fabulous!!”
Brett Whiteley travelled extensively throughout his life, setting down his experiences in charcoal, photographs and paint – a visual diary of Paris, New York, Tokyo and his many other destinations. Brett Whiteley: other places (somewhere else) showcases these paintings, drawings, photographs and sketchbooks, revealing the artist’s intense desire to document his unique vision and experiences.
The exhibition includes his early works of Paris, which have never been displayed before, and his last experiences of the city.
One of Australia’s most celebrated artists, Whiteley immersed himself in these cities, recording his impressions of the urban landscapes and the people within them, with great energy, humour and sensitivity. He responded to New York’s dynamic environment and the broader social, artistic and political issues facing America at the time. In Japan, he saw first-hand how traditional methods of Japanese painting and drawing can beautifully and succinctly capture a subject.
Whiteley produced beautiful works throughout his travels, capturing well known and loved destinations across the world in a fresh, yet recognisable way.
Brett Whiteley: other places (somewhere else) closes on Sunday 3 December 2017.
Brett Whiteley: other places (somewhere else) is an Art Gallery of New South Wales and Brett Whiteley Studio touring exhibition developed in partnership with Cairns Regional Gallery.
