Sydney Youth Orchestras' Heart in the Central West

Sydney Youth Orchestras is expanding its SYO State program which provides high level training and education in the arts to young people right where they live in Central West NSW.

Sydney Youth Orchestras is excited to return to their SYO State Regional Hub in 2017. Based on feedback received after last year’s visit, the 2017 program has expanded, and SYO is looking forward to longer, more frequent visits throughout the year. The highlights of the 2017 program include:

20 May – SYO Senior Conductors visit and present a workshop to prepare the orchestral side-by-side participants in all aspects of the music they will be performing with an SYO orchestra. This additional aspect to the program will give all the local young musicians a head start on learning their music and allow them to enjoy some extra tuition from conductors James Pensini (Symphonic Wind Orchestra) and John Ockwell (Peter Seymour Orchestra).

2-4 June – Joining 120 peers over two days, Central West musicians will be given the opportunity to play alongside musicians in the Peter Seymour Orchestra and the Symphonic Wind Orchestra with conductors John Ockwell and James Pensini. There will also be the opportunity to participate in intensive small-group tutorials with the SYO Emerging Artists. The weekend will culminate a full-scale performance at Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre (Sunday 4 June, 2pm).

The June weekend trip will also include performances in our Central West Hub satellite towns, Forbes and Gilgandra. At Gilgandra Shire Hall, SYO’s Peter Seymour Orchestra will be joined by local ensemble, the Coo-ee Choir (Saturday 3 June, 7pm) and at Forbes Hall SYO’s Symphonic Wind Orchestra will be joined by special guests The Forbes Town and District Band (Saturday 3 June, 7pm).

25-27 September – Strings Intensive Camp offers an opportunity for strings players to build on skills and learn with SYO Emerging Artists

“SYO has provided many fantastic opportunities for me and my local area that we would normally not be able to be a part of. Thanks to SYO, I have gained new skills that I will use for years to come” – Gordon Richter, SYO regional young musician

SYO State
Sydney Youth Orchestras has a long history of delivering activity across regional NSW. SYO State is an outreach project designed to increase participation and engagement in orchestral music across New South Wales. This program focuses outreach activity in the Central West with the main orchestral hub in Dubbo. Though this program SYO aims to identify and nurture talented young musicians and establish stronger community engagement and relationships.

The Central West Hub provides a great addition to the SYO orchestral training program, connecting with our regional members, touring in the cities such as Dubbo, Forbes, Gilgandra and Orange, increasing access to quality orchestral experiences and training for young musicians and music educators, and removing the barrier of geographical location and financial circumstances. The formation of networks and creative collaboration between young people inspires a commitment to cultural identity and inspiring lasting social change within these communities Sydney Youth Orchestra SYO STATE: Central West Program is supported by Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation and the Greatorex Foundation.
