Moree | Beyond Empathy Mubali Project - Vacancies

A number of vacancies are available to assist the Beyond Empathy (BE) project Mubali in Moree.

BE initiated the first belly casting project – Mubali – in Moree in 2004. For the past ten years Mubali has been independently run by the Kamilaroi (Gamilaroi) Midwifery Service at the Moree Base Hospital. In 2014 Mubali moved to the Moree East Public School to engage young Mums in the school community, ultimately improving outcomes for their young families.

Mubali means pregnant in the Gamilaroi language of northwest NSW. In the past the young women would only be seen by the midwives at the time of birthing in hospital. Now they get together with the midwives and elders each week during their pregnancies and make plaster casts of the pregnant bellies. During the process the young women receive prenatal care from the midwives. Elders then paint the bellies, connecting the younger and older Aboriginal women.
