New England Regional Art Museum Hosts Exhibition by Glen Innes Based Potter Max Powell

A new exhibition of clay artworks by Glen Innes based potter Max Powell opened at the New England Regional Art Museum on Friday 19 August 2016.

The exhibition ‘Heat Work: Contemporary Works in Clay’ by Max Powell showcases the artist’s response to the New England landscape and environment and shows his mastery of the ceramic art form through large scale works.

“This exhibition represents the artist’s investigation of the elemental tools of design and creation such as form, colour, line, and texture,” said Rachael Parsons, NERAM’s Manager, Curatorial and Exhibitions. “Powell layers these elements to create surfaces that give a feeling of the hot dry summers, the cold frosty winter mornings and the many and varied influences and stories that are drawn from the landscape and mixed into the potter’s clay.”

“His natural colour palette of browns, black, oranges and white are also elemental and seem to remain connected to the process of the works making, clay from the earth hardened in fire.”

Max Powell was born in Western Australia, where he developed a love of the rich diversity of the landscape. He studied painting at the National Art School in Sydney before returning to the country to build a house and studio on a bush block near Glen Innes.

“Living in the country and especially the Northern Tablelands, the seasons shape and guide us,” said artist Max Powell. “The basic forces in nature add structure and richness to how we live our lives and have a powerful impact on how we think, feel and respond.”

Inspired by local potters and a childhood fascination with clay he completed further study in ceramics at East Sydney Tech and Monash University, gaining a Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts (Ceramics) and Education.

For 30 years Powell also taught visual arts and ceramics at the New England Institute of TAFE and has shown his works in various solo shows in Northern NSW as well as being involved in a number of public art works in the region.

Heat Work: Contemporary works in clay by Max Powell is on display at the New England Regional Art Museum until Sunday 18 September 2016 and the artworks are on sale.
