CASP Funded Project, Ten Thousand Paces, Notches Up Another Success

Bowral’s Ten Thousand Paces project has notched up another success winning the recent Outstanding New Business category in the Regional Business Awards.

Ten Thousand Paces which refers to the catchment area for the pool of artists, was initially funded through the Country Arts Support Program (CASP) and began with a pop-up exhibition and workshop space.

Just over a year later there have been 25 shows in the exhibition space, had more than 60 artists involved in the co-op space and returned more than $250,000 back into the local creative community from sales of work.

Ten Thousand Paces spokesman, Hamish Ta-mé said five jobs had also been created with each role being filled by an artist with work in the gallery.

‘The business model we use includes each artist contributing a small amount ($55) each week to the costs of running the project and when we sell their work they get 85% of the sale back, with 15% held back for administration, Eftpos costs etc.

‘When it comes to exhibitions we don’t charge any commissions but a flat fee for the space,’ Hamish said.

Ten Thousand Paces also stocks wine from many of the local vineyards and the wines are also served at exhibition openings.

The Local Business Awards are run by Precedent Productions. Businesses are nominated and then are visited by an anonymous judge.

Hamish said there were hundreds of nominations and even though the business was a finalist, there was genuine surprise on the night that they had won.

‘The whole team went on stage. I had nothing prepared, so gave an off-the-cuff speech to the more than 500 people who attended the gala dinner,’ he said.

Christmas Callout

The success of Ten Thousand Paces also means there is a continual demand for new artworks, and especially leading up to Christmas.
