Birrang 2014 | Residency and Creative Lab Deadlines Extended

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance artists in NSW

The Birrang Creative Residency and Creative Lab application deadlines have been extended to 18th August 2014 and 8th September 2014, respectively.

The two (2) week Birrang residency at NAISDA, 22 September – 3 October, is for one choreographer and up to three collaborators.

The Creative Lab, held at Carriageworks, Redfern 7 – 11 October, is an intensive five-day workshop where mid-career and emerging dancers will develop their practice in a collaborative and supportive environment, led by industry professionals.

Also open for applications, is the Creative Business course which commences on 12 September in Lismore, and is a two-day course run by established professionals in the dance community. It has been designed to  provide professional development and practical business skills to emerging dancers who are forging a career as independent artists.

Program coordinator, Shane Carroll, said in last year’s program artists from all stages of their career came together, and not just professional dancer/choreographers.

‘There was a mix – people who work solely in a community context, producers and those who work across many platforms. There was rich cross-discipline practice among all the artists and most importantly everyone had an interest and empathy for what each artist was exploring,’ Carroll said.

‘The success of the program is in bringing these artists together to learn from each other and look to an environment of opportunities that can be self-driven. They approach the program with the key questions, ”how do I direct my own creative journey, drive my career and achieve my goals?”,’ she said.

All interested dancers are strongly encouraged to contact her at

Funding is also available from Regional Arts NSW to support applicants in attending the Birrang program. Please contact Anthony Walker, RANSW Aboriginal Arts Development Officer, on 9270 2501.
