ArtsJob | Parkes Elvis Festival Director05.05.2014
Elvis may have left the building, but his spirit comes alive in the NSW town of Parkes every January when the town hosts the annual Parkes Elvis Festival, an event which has lead to Parkes being dubbed the Elvis Capital of Australia. The iconic festival now has a vacancy for a Festival Director, a position which could possibly be one of the best jobs in the world.
With over 150 Elvis themed events taking place over 5 days, the Festival is now a feature on “bucket lists” around the country and the world with Elvis fans and non-Elvis fans alike making their way to Parkes to party “Elvis style” and embrace the event by donning their blue suede shoes, jumpsuits and Priscilla-inspired clothing.
Now in it’s 23rd year, the event has grown from within the community, managed by a passionate volunteer organisation of Elvis enthusiasts to become what is now a major annual festival attracting over 15,000 visitors annually and injecting over $9M into the regional economy.
The Festival Director will be charged with the responsibility of ensuring this major tourism asset continues to be strategically developed and managed to ensure it’s sustainability for the future. The Festival Director will be supported by the newly formed Parkes Elvis Committee, established under the auspice of Parkes Shire Council consisting of Council, Chamber of Commerce and community representatives to ensure the Festival’s long term growth and viability.
Council’s Tourism and Marketing Manager, Katrina Dwyer said “The Festival Director will be someone who is passionate about working with the community and able manage volunteers, be experienced in event management or have superior project management skills. They need to be level headed when faced with the challenges of event management such as securing sponsorships, engaging artists, coordinating marketing activities and the media, programming events and engaging with stakeholders.”
“This unique career opportunity will provide the successful applicant with enviable responsibility of planning and delivering one of Australia’s most popular events.”
The position closes on the 22nd of April. Potential applicants can get more information about the role from Parkes Shire Council’s website www.parkes.nsw.gov.au
