Muswellbrook Art Prize 2013

The 42nd Muswellbrook Art Prize is now calling for entries.

The total prize pool is $30,000.

There are three sections:

Academic, historian and authoress of Bound to Please: A History of the Victorian Corset (2001 Berg Press, London) Dr Leigh Summers BA (Hons) p.g dip MC Phd is a leading Australian expert in the area of fashion, body image, sexuality and femininity. She is the art gallery director of Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery and will be the judge for the 42nd Muswellbrook Art Prize.

“I am delighted to be judging the prestigious Muswellbrook Art Prize and I’m very mindful of its previous esteemed judges and those artists who have won,” Dr. Summers told Regional Arts NSW.  “I will be looking for excellence in each painting that has succeeded to exhibition, examining each work’s overall aesthetic, determining its level of skill and its integrity. There is often something unmediated in a strong painting. That is not to say that the work has evolved fully formed without considerable thought. Strong and winning works are usually the result of an artist’s authentic interrogation of the subject that has not been hindered by the expectations of the (potential) viewer. Sometimes that formula doesn’t work and the winning painting is inexplicably pleasing or challenging, remaining in the memory long after works deemed as extremely competent in all other respects have faded.”

With over a decade of experience in cultural management and as a gallery and museum consultant Dr. Leigh Summers has a wealth of experience with the creation, development and maintenance of public collections.
