SBS Unveils Free-to-Air Indigenous channel01.06.2012
SBS will launch an Indigenous TV channel later this year as part of a $158.1 million funding injection from the Federal Government. The Government has transferred annual funding from National Indigenous TV Limited (NITV) to SBS to develop the new free-to-air channel dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content. SBS will manage the service from 1 July and work with NITV to create new content. NITV chair Ken Reys said, “Having a dedicated channel for Indigenous television on a public broadcasting platform will be an exciting further step for Australia as it will be the first time that all Australians from remote communities to the metropolitan areas will have access to Indigenous programs free-to-air.” NITV director of content Tanya Denning will lead the new channel.
